The Sweet Briar engineering community provides a challenging and supportive environment in which women become engineers and leaders that make a difference.  Our students have been successful gaining admission to some of the top graduate programs in the country. Our students have also been successful securing co-op positions during the summer and academic year and in procurring full-time employment after graduation.

We are a small, close-knit community of students and faculty engaged in engineering.

Faculty members take a hands-on approach to teaching and learning.

In our small and interactive classes, we strongly believe in taking abstract topics from the textbook and turning them into hands-on lab experiences.

Our students and faculty provide engineering solutions to communities nearby and abroad.

We want to give back to the world we live in. Working with faculty and peers from a variety of disciplines, you'll be able to design solutions to local and developing world needs. An example is a water supply system that our students designed and built for a small village in Guatemala in the summer of 2007.

We are an interdisciplinary program bridging mechanical and electrical engineering.

We offer a unique engineering program focused on electromechanical systems and their applicability across several professions and industries.  Today’s engineers must work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and approach problems at the systems-level and our approach guarantees you will be ready for industry or graduate school.  

Students get valuable experience working in industry.

All Sweet Briar Engineering majors are guaranteed co-op experiences.  We've teamed with Region 2000, Central Virginia's Economic Development Partnership, and are working with many regional companies to facilitate co-op experiences.

Students get valuable experience doing research with faculty.
Sweet Briar engineering faculty members have active research programs and industrial consulting programs. Engineering students are important contributors to these projects.  Working side by side with an engineering faculty member on a cutting edge problem is one of the many opportunities available to you at Sweet Briar.
